The Rapidian

Get Involved

Want to get involved?

Become a reporter

The news on our website is created by local citizens, just like you. Our citizen journalists are provided with the tools, training and mentorship needed to create quality content for our site- so we won't sign you up and leave you to figure it out on your own! Whether you have a news item to report on, an opinion to share, or an experience within Grand Rapids that you want to tell us about, becoming a citizen journalist is as easy as filling out a form here. We have quarterly trainings and monthly pitch meetings with our reporters, so be sure to follow us on Facebook to find out about upcoming support events for our reporters.

Become an editorial mentor

The Rapidian's content is possible thanks to our citizen journalists- volunteers in the community working to share their news. And their work is possible thanks to our strong team of editorial mentors. Editorial mentors assist citizen journalists from beginning their ideas to getting a story ready to be published live. Want to help our community tell their stories well? Here's what we're looking for:

  • Strong understanding of grammar, spelling, punctuation and story construction

  • Familiarity with online content creation

  • Experience in journalism or similar field

  • Passion for civic engagement and a desire to forward the mission of The Rapidian

Become an intern

The Rapidian has developed a strong educational curriculum that gives students and career explorers alike a chance to build a strong foundation in the world of online journalism and communication. Interns can specialize in a topic (with local food and beer, politics, and local art being popular choices) or get a broad experience covering all sorts of local news- all while getting involved in your local community and helping to build community engagement through media.

Our internships follow local college schedules, with a fall, winter and summer internship offering- but you don't have to be a student to be an intern.
